ビリー・ジョエル、『ニューヨーク物語』の50周年記念ボックスセットがリリースされることが決定

ビリー・ジョエルは1976年に発表されたアルバム『ニューヨーク物語 (原題：Turnstiles)』の50周年を記念して、4CD＋Blu-rayボックスセットが12月11日にリリースされることが決定している。

今回の50周年記念エディションには未発表音源54トラックを含む全67トラックが収録される。また、映像では未発表24曲を含む全32曲のパフォーマンスが収録される。

なかでも大きな注目となるのが、これまで未発表だった楽曲“Oklahoma”で、今回はライヴ・ヴァージョンとデモ・ヴァージョンの両方が収録されるほか、ファンの間で長く親しまれてきた“Handball” も今回初めて公式音源としてリリースされる。

さらに、1975年にサンフランシスコのグレート・アメリカン・ミュージック・ホールで行われた公演の初出音源をはじめ、貴重なピアノ＆ヴォーカル・デモ、プロデューサーのジェイムズ・ガルシオと行われながら最終的にお蔵入りとなったセッションの音源なども収録される。

ボックスセットももう一つの大きな目玉が、Blu-rayに収められたコンサート・フィルム『Billy Joel Tonight』の完全版で、1976年12月、コネチカット州ニューロンドンのコネチカット・カレッジで行われた公演を撮影したオリジナル素材から、新たにHD化、再編集、レストア、ミックスが施され、リハーサル映像、番組制作時のインサート映像、貴重なパフォーマンスをはじめ、約半世紀にわたってほとんど公開されることのなかった貴重なアーカイヴ映像も収録されるという。Blu-rayにはさらに、『ニューヨーク物語』オリジナル・アルバムのドルビーアトモス・ミックスも収録される。

パッケージには40ページのハードカバー・ブックレットも同梱され、これまで未公開だった写真や豊富なアーカイヴ資料に加え、著名な音楽ジャーナリスト、デヴィッド・フリックによる書き下ろしライナーノーツが掲載される。さらにジョン・ジャクソンによる詳細なヒストリカル・ノーツでは、アルバム制作の背景と、ビリー・ジョエルの音楽的方向性を決定づけることになった重要な出来事が克明に綴られている。

「『Turnstiles』の物語とは、“ピアノ・マン” が “ビリー・ジョエル” になった物語でもある」本作のプロデューサーであり、ビリー・ジョエル・アーカイヴスのディレクターを務めるジョン・ジャクソンは、今回のコレクションについてそう記している。

「1975年から1976年にかけて、ビリー・ジョエルは行く先々で成功と挫折を経験した。並のアーティストであれば、その歩みを止めてしまってもおかしくないほどの出来事の連続だった。しかし、ビリー・ジョエルは違った。自らのヴィジョンを貫き、どんな代償を払ってでも自身の芸術に忠実であり続けた。その強い意志が、彼を単なる“ピアノ・マン”ではない、“ビリー・ジョエル” へと変えたのだ」
