ジョニ・ミッチェルは50年以上に及ぶキャリアからアーカイヴ音源がリリースされることが発表されている。
第1弾となる『ジョニ・ミッチェル・アーカイヴスVol. 1〜アーリー・イヤーズ（1963-1967）』は10月30日にリリースされる。本作は1968年にジョニ・ミッチェルがリプリーズ・レコードからデビューする以前の音源が収録される。
『ジョニ・ミッチェル・アーカイヴスVol. 1〜アーリー・イヤーズ（1963-1967）』は5枚組CDボックスセットで、6時間以上の未発表音源が収録される。そのうちの29トラックはジョニ・ミッチェルのヴォーカルではリリースされたことのないものとなっている。
40ページのライナーノーツにはキャメロン・クロウがアーカイヴ音源についてジョニ・ミッチェルにインタヴューした内容が掲載される。キャメロン・クロウはキャリアを通してジョニ・ミッチェルにインタヴューしてきており、噂によればこのアーカイヴ・シリーズに今後も寄与していくことになるという。
リリースに先立ってジョニ・ミッチェルが当時19歳の時にサスカトゥーンのラジオ局「CFQC」で“House of the Rising Sun”をカヴァーした音源が公開される。
プレス・リリースでジョニ・ミッチェルは今回のリリースで初期音源に対する不安に打ち勝つことになったと語っている。
「初期の音源に対してスノッブになるべきではないのよ」と彼女は語っている。
「長い間、私はずっと反抗していたの。『私はフォーク・シンガーじゃない』ってね。そうやって言われる度に腹を立ててた。それはいい形容だとは思っていなかったの。でも、聴いてみたら、美しかったの。それで始めた時のことを許せるようになったの。そして、私はフォーク・シンガーだったと分かったの」
日本盤は歌詞、解説の日本語訳が添付されて、11月25日にリリースされる。
